Candidates for restorative dentistry

Restorative dentistry is most often recommended for patients with complex treatment requirements, for example patients who:

  • have undergone radiotherapy or surgery for oral cancers.
  • have sustained a large amount of damage as a result of periodontal disease, excessive tooth decay, acid erosion or other oral care concerns.
  • suffer from sleep apnea.
  • have facial deformities.
  • suffer from jaw joint discomfort or pain.
  • have been affected by developmental conditions such as cleft lip and palate or hypodontia, who as a result require specialist multidisciplinary care.
  • have suffered extensive trauma or injury to the face, teeth, mouth, neck or jaw.

What types of restorations are available?

Restorative dentistry can encompass many different types of treatment. Depending on your personal dental conditions, you might require one or a combination of restorative treatments. Some of the most common restorative procedures include:

Crowns

Dental crowns are a solution for teeth that are cracked, eroded or otherwise damaged. They totally cover the affected tooth, so that the crown is all that you can see, restoring the appearance as well as the function of your teeth. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including color-matched porcelain, which make them a popular choice in cosmetic dentistry.

Bridges

A dental bridge is a device that replaces one or more missing teeth and is anchored to your natural teeth using crowns. Position, function and aesthetics will be taken into account when selecting the right material for your dental bridge.

Veneers

Veneers are most often used to create a uniform shape and size to the appearance of teeth. They are shell-like porcelain covers that are bonded to the enamel on the outside of your teeth, and can be created in any shade, which is why they are also a popular choice for patients who are considering cosmetic dentistry treatment. Veneers can restore chipped, misshapen, gapped, or severely discolored teeth.

Orthodontic Brace or Invisalign®

If you have teeth that are crooked or overlapping, or if you have an underbite, overbite or crossbite, then you will almost certainly need the expertise of an orthodontist. Traditional orthodontic braces can correct bite-related problems, while a more discreet solution, Invisalign®, can straighten misaligned teeth.

Root Canal

When decay progresses to the point that it penetrates the center layer of the tooth, an infection is inevitable. You may even develop an abscess. Root canal treatment is usually the only viable option to remove the infection and prevent it from spreading into your jaw.

Scaling and Root Planing

This is a periodontal procedure which cleans bacteria and food debris from minuscule pockets that form between the tooth and gums as a result of periodontal disease.
